Willow

Action Adventure Drama

Fearful of a prophecy stating that a girl child will be born to bring about her downfall, the evil Queen Bavmorda imprisons all pregnant women within the formidable stronghold of Nockmaar. A child, Elora Danan, is born in the Nockmaar dungeons and identified as the prophesied child by a birthmark on her arm. However, before the black sorceress arrives to claim the child, Elora's mother convinces her reluctant midwife to escape with the baby. Willow, a timid farmer and aspiring sorcerer, is entrusted with delivering the royal infant from evil.

Note : It was a more innocent time, the 80s, when George Lucas could pitch almost any movie he wanted, and Ron Howard wasn't making mythologizing propaganda pieces about nakedly fascist mental midgets with bad guyliner, preferring instead to make movies about actual dwarves. So here's Willow, a really fun little sword and sorcery film that wasn't really a hit on release, but rightfully turned into a cult classic on home video, and even spawned a sequel TV series on Disney+, at least until Bob Iger decided to bury it, because we can't have anything nice. The story is pretty bog-standard faux-Tolkien little people accidentally receive a magical burden and must travel out of their idyllic small town existence to face the forces of evil and overthrow a magical dictator, with the help of a motley found family that learns to trust each other along the way. However, it's visually stunning, has a good sense of humor, some great practical and early visual effects, and a cast that's much better than it has to be, including Warwick Davis, Val Kilmer, Joanne Whalley, Jean Marsh, Patricia Hayes, Billy Barty, Pat Roach, Gavan O'Herlihy (son of genre icon Dan O'Herlihy), David Steinberg, and Mark Northover.

Evil queen slash sorceress Bavmorda hears of a prophecy that she will be overthrown by a child with a birthmark in the shape of a rune, and since Bavmorda has apparently read the Old Testament, she imprisons all the realm's pregnant women and has the newborns inspected for runes as soon as they pop out. This seemingly more humane approach doesn't serve her that well, though, because when the kid is born, the mother has the midwife smuggle it out. She's pursued by Bavmorda's monstrous hounds, but since she's also read the Bible, she sets the baby adrift on a river before becoming hellhound chow. Bavmorda, fed up with the soft touch, sends out an army led by General Kael and accompanied by her daughter Sorsha, to find the baby and bring it back. The baby, meanwhile, floats into the village of a bunch of little people who are preparing a festival, and is found by the children of the farmer Willow Ufgood, who wants nothing more than to be a sorcerer, who takes care of it, but the festival is attacked by the hellhounds, and the village council decides that Willow and a group of companions must take the baby back to be taken care of by a human family. They set out on their quest, soon coming across roguish swordsman Madmartigan, trapped in a gibbet, who's more than willing to take the baby in return for being released, but Willow isn't so sure. A passing army, led by Madmartigan's old friend Airk, is on the way to attack Bavmorda, and after witnessing this, Willow agrees to give Madmartigan the baby, and frees him. However, the baby's stolen by even smaller people, which gets them in touch with the Fairy Queen, and they're sent out to find the enchantress Fin Raziel, Willow receiving a magic wand as a gift. And so on, there are a lot of twists and turns, but suffice to say, good little people must face down big evil and somehow win.

This 4k remaster was quite good looking, although the color grade in HDR is fairly punchy, so even with scene by scene adjustments, the SDR version ended up slightly hot in a few places. I don't think it's distracting, though, and otherwise the image looks great, with nice color and contrast, good detail, and subtle grain. The 5.1 remaster is likewise quite nice, the original stereo sounds good too, and the commentary track with the inimitable Warwick Davis is well worth listening to. There's also the Jaboody track, of course, as usual quite funny.

HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords. Try searching for “hevk fantasy” for more fantastic worlds and evil queens, “hevk witch” for more magic users with nefarious intentions, or “hevk 80s” for more from the decade when George Lucas squandered a lot of goodwill, but we got this at least.
